uplifting inspirationalFor something uplifting and inspirational, I think that one of the greatest examples would have to be the life of Mother Teresa.

Many of you probably already know the story of how an Albanian nun, eventually made her way to India, to the crowded city of Calcutta to work with the poorest of the poor: those men, women and children who were the “untouchables”, whom no one else wanted anything to do with.  For 45 years she worked to provide food and comfort and medical care to the people who needed it most.  She founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta in 1950 (which continued to expand, and at the time of her death it was operating 610 missions in 123 countries, including hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children and family counseling programs, orphanages, and schools).

In 1979 she won the Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian work.  When she died in 1997 (at the age of 87),  from heart failure, many people, all over the world thought that she should be declared a saint;  but as far as I’m concerned, she was already a saint, having devoted the majority of her life to helping many of the most vulnerable and abandoned people on earth.

In a mind-boggling revelation released by Time Magazine a few years ago (and chronicled in the book “Come Be My Light”:  see below), it was revealed that Mother Teresa had spent almost 50 years,  till the time of her death, wrestling with her own “dark night of the soul”, during which time she felt that she had lost her connection to God and Jesus. She felt she could no longer feel their presence within her.  She spent years and years writing letters to her confessors asking for their guidance and prayers in order to help her with this earth-shattering emptiness she felt!  However, despite the fact that she could feel no connection, and struggled with that pain for most of her life, she continued to have the faith that God was there.  She continued her mission to help the poorest of the poor in spite of the spiritual struggles she was having.

Here is a poem she wrote during her long and meaningful life:

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God; It was never between you and them anyway.

Mother Teresa wrote this uplifting and inspirational poem, in spite of everything.………
