Reflecting on inspirational proverbs, I realized that they are often simple, condensed snippets of advice from God on how to live our daily lives.  I realized that, many times in my life, I had unconsciously followed their wise counsel.  The following story is an example:

After graduating from college, I found a job with a small school working with kids who had learning disabilities, dyslexia, and several behavioral problems.

Talking out in the yard one day with one of my teenage students, “Jess” decided that it would be fun to call out to the big burly man across the street, who was digging a ditch to repair a pipe.  He started to taunt the man and I cautioned, “Jess, what are you doing??”  Ignoring me he started to yell insults at the man, who finally threw down his shovel and barreled across the street, flinging open the school gate, grabbing Jess, and pushing him against the wall.  With his face an inch away from Jess and a forearm across his chest, I was afraid that Jess would get the beating he’d been asking for…….

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger.  – Proverbs 15:1

Seeing that Jess had lost his disrespectful smirk and keeping myself calm, I told the man in a measured voice, “Listen, mister, he doesn’t realize what he’s saying, he’s just a kid.”  The man continued to look daggers at Jess, still pinning him to the wall.  I continued softly, “It’s just words”……….

I’d moved close to where they were both standing, waiting quietly.

Finally, the man let go of Jess and turned to me.  His demeanor immediately softened as he looked at me, “Well, you just need to tell him to shut up.”  I nodded, “I will”.

He walked out of the gate and back across the street.  Jess shrugged his shoulders, the smirk returning to his face.  “Next time, Jess, I’m going to let him kick your butt, if you ever do that again.”

I’d diffused a tense situation by speaking softly and remaining calm.  Thank God.
